The Akari Floor Lamp, a hallmark of mid-20th century design, draws directly from traditional Japanese fishing lanterns, reflecting both cultural heritage and artistic innovation. Created by an American-Japanese artist in 1951, the lamp’s structure combines slender wooden ribs with delicate mulberry paper, evoking the original bamboo and paper lanterns used in Gifu’s fishing villages. Named “Akari,” meaning “light” in Japanese, it embodies both literal illumination and a sense of ethereal lightness. This handcrafted floor lamp offers a soft, ambient glow, serving as a sculptural lighting piece that enhances interiors with timeless elegance and refined craftsmanship.
